North Shore, RI – The Blue Sox were unable to snap the five-game winning streak of the Newport Gullls on Friday night at Cardines Field falling to the Newport Gulls 4-2, splitting the season series between the two squads as Holyoke took the first game at Mackenzie Stadium earlier this season.
Holyoke put the ball in the hands of Daniel Watts, who had not started since July 7 in Vermont where he got his first loss of the season. and he would not be successful in his fourth start of the season.
Like in many of the last few outings the Blue Sox were able to jump out to an early lead against the Gulls as a costly error by Newport starting pitcher Jon Prosinski, who went six and 2/3 inningsa pitched giving up only the two runs improving to 4-0 on the season, as he fielded a routine groundball but airmailed it over the head of the first baseman allowing Eric Smith to come in and score making it 1-0 Holyoke.
But that lead would not last long as the Gulls came out jumped on Watts (1-2) very quickly after it looked like he would get out of the inning without a run coming across the board after recordng the first two outs.
The Gulls (15-9) showed that they could come through with some clutch two-out hitting as back-to-back doubles scoring Matt Foat from second base, who doubled and then was driven in by Tim Kiene with his double tieing that game at one apiece.
With a man on second and two outs Eric Johnson stepped into the box and got the lead for the Gulls thanks to a two-run blast scoring Kiene making it 3-1 Newport after just one inning.
The scoring slowed down for both teams after this point as both pitchers settled in until the fifth inning when Matt Tenaglia disrupted his groove with his first home run of the season cutting into the Gulls lead making it 3-2. That would be the final run Holyoke (17-11) would score in the game.
Newport would tack on an insurance run in the seventh inning as Jeff Melillo would come through with an RBI single driving in Tom Richards to make it 4-2 which would be the final score.
The Gulls called on Eddie Campbell to get his first save of the season and he was able to come in and shut the door for the victory.
Holyoke is back in action on Saturday against the Mystic at Mackenzie Stadium with the game starting at 6:30 p.m.
