Holyoke – Alex Sherrod has only been with the Blue Sox for a couple of days, but has already made his presence felt with a couple clutch hits in his time with the Blue Sox already including the game-winning RBI double in the 3-2 win against Newport.
The game began with a prime time pitching matchup between Ben Mount for the Blue Sox and Jacob Lee of the Gulls taking the hill for their respective teams. Mount finished the night going six innings, five hits and set down five Gulls on strikes, while his counterpart lasted seven innings but gave up two runs on five hits and struck out six of his own.
The Blue Sox got on the board in the fourth inning thanks to a wild pitch from Lee scoring Sherrod from third giving the Blue Sox an early 1-0 lead. Holyoke would add another in the fifth on a Kris Richards RBI double driving in Sam Eberle who registered a double of his own earlier in the inning. This gave the Blue Sox a 2-0 lead which would hold until the seventh inning when the Gulls answered with two runs to tie up the game.
Gulls right fielder Robert Ort drove in Conor Keniry from third base on a ground out to Blue Sox second baseman Frank DeSico cutting the lead in half. They would not be done as a pitch got away from Blue Sox relief pitcher Chris Jenkins allowing Kyle Johnson to score the game tying run.
Following a lead off single by Kris Richards, DeSico placed a bunt perfectly in front of the plate allowing Richards to move into scoring position. He would not stand on second for very long as Sherrod delivered what became the game-winning RBIS double scoring Richards to take the 3-2 lead.
Blue Sox pitcher Ryan Harvey, who was the winning pitcher, closed out the game and got the win for the Blue Sox and Gulls relief pitcher Daniel Wright, who gave up the Sherrod double, was tagged with the loss.
The Blue Sox are back in action tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. against the North Adams Steeple Cats in Mackenzie Stadium before hitting the road for two during the weekend. The Blue Sox will be back home on July 4th to take on the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide at 2 p.m.
