Game 2 vs. Vermont Mountaineers

The Vermont Mountaineers took a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning after being held scoreless for the entire game. But a 6 run inning helped the Blue Sox top the Mountaineers 9-3 Wednesday night at MacKenzie Stadium in Holyoke.

The win pushes Holyoke past Vermont in the Western Division standings. Their playoff hopes are still alive as the Keene Swamp Bats lost to Bristol Collegiate. Holyoke needs a lot of help to make the postseason. The Sox must win all their games and Keene must lose all of their games.

After getting a run in the third and the fourth, Holyoke commanded a 2-0 lead. Blue Sox starter Ryan Deeter (UCLA) was solid on the mound. He almost got through 7 innings before Vermont began to figure him out. Vermont got a run on the board, but Deeter almost got out of a bases loaded jam. However, Willy Carmona ripped a 2 run double to right centerfield to take the lead 3-2.

The Sox battled back in their half of the seventh. Holyoke had the bases loaded when Brandon Miller (Samford) singled to left to score the tying run. Two batters later Alex Foltz (James Madison) walked to score the lead run. Frank Hager (Cornell) later singled home a pair of runs, then scored on a Julian Sonnenfeld (Wesleyan) RBI double. “We had the bases loaded and the hitters’ concentration level went up,” said Blue Sox head coach Darryl Morhardt. “Then we hit the ball real well.”

Deeter pitched 6.2 innings striking out 3 and allowing 3 unearned runs. Dane Clemens (Boston College) and Brian Bodjiak (Rhode Island) shut down Vermont for the last 2.2 innings.

Holyoke will not return home as they begin the final road trip. They will head down to Muzzy Field to face Bristol Collegiate. Then head to Keene for a big Friday night came with playoff implications. The final game will take place in Vermont against the Mountaineers. Vermont hosts the Danbury Westerners Thursday night.
